JUP decides to boycott general polls

KARACHI — Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (JUP), a component of Muttahida Majlis-e-Aamal (MMA), will boycott the general elections on February 18 and would whole-heartedly support All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) on the issue.

The decision was taken at a meeting held here that came to the conclusion that participation in the election process had become an exercise in futility as the caretaker set-up had failed in its duty to provide level playing field for opposition political parties.

The party's 71 candidates who were nominated to contest for national and provincial assemblies' seats have filed applications to the returning officers expressing their decisions to retire from the electoral process.
