The agreement was signed between Jordan’s national’s electricity company and the electrical company of the Jerusalem governorate run by the Palestine Authority, the agency said.

In line with the agreement, Jordan will supply Jericho with power from the Suwayma plant near the Dead Sea through a 30-kilometer (18.6 mile) double-circuit overhead power line, the agency said.

Twenty-two kilometers will pass through Jordanian territory while the rest will fall within territory held by the Palestinian Authority in the Jericho area, just west of Jordan, it said.

A power plant is to be built in the Jericho area at a later stage and the Sumayma plant will also be bolstered, the agency said quoting Ahmad Hiyassat, the director general of Jordan’s national electricity company.

His Palestinian counterpart Hisham al-Omari said the project would provide cheaper electricity for the population of Jericho which has relied on power provided by Israel.
