India Shipping Summit 2005 is expected to attract key delegations from the Middle East, now seen as a gateway for India's increasing European and US trade. The summit will be held in September in Mumbai.

“With a strong surge in India's international trade, commerce and economic activities relating to export and import, the country's shipping industry is assuming a new and a bigger role, both regionally and globally,” said P.K. Srivastava, Chairman and Managing Director, Shipping Corporation of India (SCI), the country's largest and most diversified shipping company.

A joint venture between international maritime publishers TradeWinds and Seatrade, the summit will be held at the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, Mumbai, from September 21-22 and will engage the full spectrum of India's maritime sector.

“The impact of the growth in India's economy on global shipping will be massive. The links between this nation of one billion and the Gulf region are historic, and thriving at this time,” said Chris Hayman, Managing Director, Seatrade.

“This is most evidenced by the decision earlier this year by Dubai Ports International to invest $930 million in a container terminal in the Indian port of Kochi.”

High on the summit's agenda will be current issues surrounding India as a source nation for the shipping industry's growing manning requirements. And although the conference focuses on the private sector, it also has the support of the Indian Government and various professional bodies.

“The India Shipping Summit will provide an excellent opportunity for interaction between the Indian and international maritime fraternity on issues of importance that will impact the global shipping community,” said Capt. J.C Anand, Chairman, The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), an internationally recognised independent ship classification society.
