India has 31.5 million taxpayers
NEW DELHI — In a country of over a billion people, only 31.5 million people pay taxes, and this is after the number of taxpayers has grown by nearly 11 per cent between March 2002 and March 2006.
The finance ministry said the number of taxpayers has increased from 28.4 million in 2002 to 31.5 million in 2006. Directorate of Income Tax (Systems) said a total of 54 million Permanent Account Numbers had been allotted till July 5, 2007.
