Interestingly, some people with mild symptoms of psoriasis maybe unmindful of its existence. Nevertheless, the scaly problem affects people of all ages — although it has a distinct proclivity to affect youngsters around age 20 and/or people in their fifth or sixth decade.

Causes may range from stress to depression — they “fuel” the scaly disorder in predisposed individuals. Other offending causes include throat infections, skin trauma — cuts, bruises or burns — certain medications, psychological distress, smoking and high alcohol intake. Psoriasis is multi-faceted. What is, however, universal is its typical outward manifestation: thickening and reddening of patches of skin. These may be present on the elbows, knees, scalp, lower back and lower extremities, along with thick silvery-white scales of dead skin that may itch substantially. In some instances, psoriasis may fade and reappear, for no obvious reason. Psoriasis is usually diagnosed from the appearance or presentation of symptoms, and by way of a physical examination. A tiny skin sample may also be sent to the laboratory to validate the diagnosis. Homeopathy aims to treat the individual affected by psoriasis, not just the problem on the surface. It also lays the greatest emphasis on the individual’s psychological make-up, or what triggers, aggravates, or eases the condition, including stress or emotional anguish, environmental factors, food sensitivities and/or preferences.

Fourteen-year-old Tina (name changed) had psoriasis since age nine, following her father’s death. She stopped going to school, owing to her ungainly psoriatic patches, and stayed at home with her mother. When we analysed her case, we found that she was greatly attached to her father and missed him badly. She showed strong feelings of emotional uncertainty, along with emotional disconnection. This, we deduced, was the most likely trigger for her psoriatic patches.

When her emotional angst was treated with Magnesium Carbonicum, a homeopathic remedy, which is almost “specific” to problems of emotional insecurity and separation, she was able to overcome her scaly distress — quickly, safely and effectively.
