Speaking to Khaleej Times yesterday, Georg Albach, regional marketing manager, Heidleberg, Western Europe, Middle East and Africa said: "The printing industry in the region is growing at faster pace compared to the rest of the world, while there is huge demand for high quality printed material from within the region, the demand for high quality printed material from the neighbouring regions will support the continued growth of Dubai's printing industry."

The demand for the printed material is growing at annual rate of 10 per cent per year in the region. "General economic boom supported by growing demand from tourism sector, manufacturing advertising, and publishing are contributing to the growth," said Zeid B Al-Jehni, general manager, Heidelberg Middle East.

The Middle East region has a comparatively low per capita consumption of printed material worth 16 euros against 423 euros in Japan, 294 in North America and 227 in Europe. With the growing level of literacy in the region with increasing standards of education and print media there has been double-digit growth in the demand for printed material across the region.

With the setting up of International Media Free Zone in Dubai, the printing industry in Dubai is expected to emerge as a major outsourcing centre for printing solutions across the world. "The quality currently available in Dubai is comparable to anything that are available anywhere else in the world today. The products and solutions could be offered at competitive rates, making Dubai a cost effecting outsourcing centre," added Al-Jehni.

Heidelberg has the market leadership in printing machines in the Middle East with more than 40 per cent market share in the UAE and over 60 per cent market share in the Middle East region. Worldwide, the company claims more than 45 per cent market share. "In the UAE Heidelberg's nearest competitor is used machines from Heidleberg. Together, our market share is in excess of 60 per cent," he said.

Heidelberg will present its latest printing technologies and solutions at Drupa 2004, the most important tradeshow for the print media industry will be held at Dusseldorf from May 6-19. In addition to around 50 product innovations premiering at Drupa, the company will also unveil its latest network printing production. "Drupa will be an important opportunity for the industry players to familiarise themselves with the latest developments in the printing industry. From the Middle East we are expecting more than 500 visitors to our stand this year," Albach said.
