Al Gergawi was in Lebanon to speak at the Arab Investment & Capital Markets Conference (ACM) that took place in Beirut on May 22 and 23. DDIA was the Lead Sponsor.

During the meeting, Al Hariri and Al Gergawi discussed the strong relationship between Lebanon and the UAE as well as measures to further boost ties and make them deeper, especially in the sectors of economy and investments. This, the two believe, will serve the interests of the UAE and Lebanon in particular, and the Arab region in general.

They agreed to continue contacts, communications and meetings to map out ways of coordinating Arab efforts to attract foreign direct investments (FDI).

Al Gergawi assured Al Hariri that under the directive of UAE President, His Highness Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE is committed to support the relationship between Arab countries and to bring about a common approach to all issues affecting the Arab world.

The Lebanese Premier emphasised his eagerness and commitment to boost good relations between the UAE and Lebanon. Al Hariri assured the commitment of his government to offer all possible assistance and facilities to businessmen and investors from the UAE and the Arab world, Al Gergawi said.

"During our meeting, I felt His Excellency's great interest in further catalyzing economic cooperation between Arab countries. This is an important element in our path to develop the economies of our region. His Excellency assured that Lebanon will support any effort which would achieve higher levels of coordination - whether between the UAE and Lebanon or between all Arab countries," Al Gergawi added.

The DDIA Chairman expected that in the coming period, the level of cooperation and coordination between the UAE and Lebanon would rise - especially in the sectors of investments and exchange of expertise.

Al Gergawi reiterated his call to Lebanon and other Arab countries to support the joint proposal of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE, which have called for the formation of an umbrella Arab association to coordinate regional efforts to attract FDI. The initiative to form such as association was at the direction of General Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister.

The call for joint efforts to attract FDI was one of the highlights of the many meetings that Al Gergawi held with other Arab officials participating at the Arab Investment and Capital Markets Conference in Beirut.
