The proposed law has been the subject of intense debate in France for months, with thousands of French Moslems protesting around the country on January 17 against the bill.

There were also protests in Muslim countries and demands by politicians in some countries, notably Iran, that the law be scrapped.

The draft law is scheduled to be debated in the French National Assembly for three days beginning on February 3. If it becomes law, it will go into effect when public school resumes after the summer holidays.
