Foodstuff trade up128pc

DUBAI — According to statistics compiled by the Department of Statistics at Dubai Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation (PCFC), the trade of foodstuff in Dubai has increased by 128 per cent between the year 2001 and 2005. The total value of foodstuff trade in 2005 amounted to Dh19.96 billion, while the total trade in 2001 was Dh8.74 billion.

Compared to 2004 when the total trade in foodstuff amounted to Dh 15 billion, there was a 33 per cent increase in 2005. Also, in 2005, the value of imports stood at Dh13.27 billion exports at Dh 3.11 billion and re-exports at Dh3.57 billion. In 2001 these figures were Dh 6.54, Dh45.86 million and Dh1.74 billion respectively.

A breakup of the value of foodstuff imported during 2005 showed that edible fruits and nuts, peel of citrus fruits or melons was Dh 1.48 billion; sugars and sugar confectionery was Dh1.45 billion.
