Dr Abdulqader Al Khayat, executive director of DuBiotech, told Khaleej Times yesterday while the number of companies willing to join the biotechnology park was higher, the problem was accommodating them.

He said: "Over 500 companies across the industry value chain from the region and around the world have so far shown interest in joining DuBiotech, but the problem is that we do not have our own facilities yet.

"All the companies we have signed up are operating out of dedicated buildings in Dubai Media City. Those are a mix of global companies, research and development and manufacturing firms." He said the construction of the Dh1.5 billion phase one of the park would start before the end of this month. "The master plan has been finalised and we have already awarded a contract for the infrastructure development. We will start breaking ground in two weeks time from now," he said.

The phase one consists of a headquarters building with convention centre, offices building, four laboratory and research buildings, and a four-star hotel.

According to Al Khayat, the completion of the four laboratory buildings and the headquarter building is scheduled for the end of next year.

"These types of companies that we are bringing to the park takes time to be relocated and be establish in a new place. And also it is about regulations, especially in drugs and medical equipment manufacturing. Regulations should be developed to enable manufacturers to market their products. Also, since we do not have strong science development in the region, we are trying to attract more universities to the park," he explained.

Meanwhile, Amgen, one of the world's largest biotechnology companies, yesterday announced the opening of its regional office in Dubai. Commercial operations of Amgen in the Middle East and Africa will be managed from Dubai."Our intent is to be the biotech industry's premier player in MENA region."
