IATA, a global trade group of airlines, said it received from Dubai Airports a commitment not to hike its charges for the next four years, when the aviation industry is likely to be suffering the effects of the global recession. Dubai Airports manages Dubai International Airport and will also operate the upcoming Al Maktoum International Airport, planned as the world’s largest.

IATA’s Regional Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa Dr. Majdi Sabri praised Dubai’s support for IATA’s “Simplifying the Business” programme, which aims to cut costs for airlines. Sabri said it is important that gains in airline efficiency are matched by those of airports.

IATA asked 133 airports worldwide for urgent action in light of the global financial crisis. Only a few, including Dubai and Kuwait from this region, responded positively, Sabri said. Kuwait airport provided incentives for airport services and a 10 per cent discount in fuel prices. On the other hand, he said, Saudi Arabia and Egypt increased airport charges without proper consultation with their users, contrary to guidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, a UN agency governing global civil aviation.
