Dubai Awards Dh4.9b Contract for C3 Project

Work is to commence immediately with its completion scheduled by the end of April 2011. Concourse 3 is an extension and continued development of Concourse 1 (C1) and 2 (C2).

It is a fully airside structure and is connected to the two major public levels of Terminal 3 via an Automated People Mover (APM) in addition to the Vehicular and Baggage Handling System (BHS) utility tunnels.

Concourse 3 is partially an underground structure comprising the APM stations (both arriving and departing) and extends above the ground under a metal shell to accommodate 20 Aircraft Stands, 18 of which are A-380 in addition to 6 hold rooms for remote stands.

The building follows the characteristic (size and arched shape openings along its exterior wall) of Concourse 2, the lower and upper levels of C3 are connected by means of a special vertical transportation system (sky train) that acts as a focal point feature in central atrium.

The elliptical form of the skin changes and tapers towards the end, but it remains rectilinear in projection. Encased in its elliptical shaped form are two rectangular volumes that hold both four and five star hotel operations.

The First Class and Business Class Lounges are located on two separate levels below the hotel. The built-up area is approximately 528,000 square metres and it comprises in addition to the EK lounges and hotels, the arrivals and departure floors including the Duty Free area.

It is to be noted that the Sky Train, the vertical and horizontal transportation systmes, the BHS, the passenger loading bridges, APM, screening equipment are packages that were already awarded as they are common packages with the T3 and C2 buildings.

The HMRT Joint Venture’s successful delivery of the recently opened Terminal 3 and adjoining Concourse 2 at the same airport was instrumental in HMRT securing this new project.

A spokesman for the HMRT Joint Venture said the award of the new concourse was a tribute to the performance of HMRT.

“Dubai airport is the key aviation hub in the Gulf region and one of the most important airports in the world, and we are delighted to be playing a key role in its continued development,” he said.

“Our success on Terminal 3 and Concourse 2, which was successfully opened in October this year and has been operating extremely efficiently, was a key factor in the joint venture securing Concourse 3.”

The Al Habtoor — Murray & Roberts partnership has a long history with the Dubai Airport, being responsible for the construction of Shaikh Rashid Terminal, commonly referred to as Terminal 1. It has also been responsible for associated projects including the Airport Expo Centre, the Flower Centre, and the chalets for the Dubai Air Show.
