The facility is located at the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi 3, and is being developed by Tawazun Holding, a long-term development company of Abu Dhabi.
“The project called, Tawazun Disaster Management City [TDMC], is being developed on an area of 400,000 square metres. Phase one has already been completed with the main headquarters’ structures operational providing some training currently,” Project Director Khalifa Al Hemairi told Khaleej Times at IDEX 2011.
According to him, the entire project will be completed in five phases by 2015. He said as the city will be developed in phases, trainings will be offered step-by-step.
When asked about the estimated cost of the project, Al Hemairi said it was in the feasibility study, and though the work has started it would be difficult to talk or speculate about the investments.
“The feasibility study itself will be completed in March and the full report or the study will be released in May,” he explained.
Tawazun has put a model of the project at the exhibition featuring all segments of managing disasters, including nuclear plant, metro and rail network, oil and gas, factories, roads and transports, tunnels, bridges, shipping, residential areas, labour complexes, educational institutions and shopping malls.
“Everything is included here. We can train and exercise all types of safety measures — earthquake, floods, building collapses, air disasters, fire-fighting, marine disasters, you name it every preventing and safety measures are covered in the city,” he explained. Al Hemairi said all these are divided into zones with their own premises and facilities. The city also has a zone where hazardous and biological materials are dealt with. Another facility is for checking machineries and vehicles, which will be done in partnership and authorisation of authorities concerned.
“It is a multi-agency project. The vision is to be ‘The Leader in Multi-Agency Training for emergency, crisis and disaster management.’ We want to provide world-class training experience in a future-proof environment that prepares and instils safety culture in professionals and communities to be ready and resilient.”
Under the project, TDMC aims to provide training for the community at large, officials or employees of governmental and quasi-governmental and private agencies and organisations.
