Big India presence at Idex ‘03

ABU DHABI The Indian defence production industry led by Minister of State for Defence Production, Supplies and Parliamentary Affairs Mr Rajagopal is taking part in the International Defence Exhibition Idex'03, showcasing hi-tech defence equipments.

The Ordinance Factory Board, Bharat Dynamics and Bharat Earth Movers are displaying their products and services at the pavilion. Among products displayed are the 155 mm Field Gun and a modified 130 mm gun developed by the Ordinance Factory Board. The gun uses NATO standard shells and standard chart systems. A live demonstration of the gun will be held at the Maqatara range.

The highlight of Indian presence is the Indian ship INS-Mumbai, at the Mina Zayed port. The tenth warship in history to bear the name of the city of Mumbai, it is the third ship of the Delhi Class of destroyers, built at the Mazagon Dock after being commissioned on January 22, 2001.

The 6700-tonne, 163.2-mete long INS-Mumbai has state-of-the-art sensors and is capable of prolonged sustenance at sea and powered by four gas turbines with a top speed in execess of 30 knots.

Her formidable arsenal includes surface-to-surface missiles, surface-to-air missiles, medium and close range guns, torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets and decoys. Its defence systems include radars, sonars and electronic radar support systems. The ship can carry helicopters capable of anti-submarine and anti-surface operations.

The ship with a crew of 30 officers and 300 sailors, is commanded by Capt. A.Y. Kalaskar.

Spanish technology

Eight Spanish companies are taking part in the exhibition, while two companies couldn't participate. Economic Counsellor, Spain Jose Luis Perez Sanchez said that Spanish defence industry is not large in relation to other sectors, but it is outstanding as regards to technological capacity and competitiveness. He said companies are showcasing light and medium transport aircraft, structural, thermal and power sub-systems for launchers, satellites and orbital infrastructure, various engineering products, aviation bombs, artillery ammunition, medium calibre ammunition, mortars and mortar grenades, naval ammunition, rockets and warheads, engineering explosives, anti-tank, anti-armour, anti-bunker ammunitions, day/night vision and computing units, patrol boats, high mobility vehicles, military trucks, parachutes and various other products.

Companies which have installed their stalls include CIMSA Ingenieria de Sistemas, EADS CASA, E.M.C. APRA, Grupo Expal, Instalaza, IZAR Construcciones navales, Rodman polyships, and URO Vehiculos Especiales
