Bahrain all set for Games

Bahrain have completed preparations to host the first Gulf Games scheduled to held during the period from October 11 to 22, Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Secretary General, Bahraini National Olympic Committee confirmed.

Speaking during the 69th meeting of the executive committee of the Gulf national Olympic committees chairmen at the Armani Hotel in Dubai on Sunday, the top sports official said: “Competitions will be open in all games and the Gulf nations may send either their respective senior, Olympic or second string football national teams,” he said.

Meanwhile, the meeting has also praised the recommendations embodied in the report which has been submitted by the coordination and follows up committee and valued the efforts which have been exerted in finalising the arrangements to kick off the Games on time.

Regarding the introduction of the Gulf Marathon (42.195km) to be held on annual basis in coincidence with AGCC Summit in the host country, it has been decided that 12 athletes from each member country may take part in the competition.

The meeting directed the general secretariat to liaison with the AGCC Athletics Orgainsing Committee to provide more explanations and details about the brilliant proposals.

The meeting also congratulated Dr Rashid Al Haryoul of Saudi Arabia after being elected chairman of the educational committee of the Asian Olympic Council (AOC) and UAE’s Mohammed Al Kamali, board member of the executive committee on being elected chairman of the cultural committee of the AOC.

In the meantime, the participants in the meeting thanked Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the UAE National Olympic Committee for the great developments which have been undertaken and the big jump in the Olympic activities which enriched the joint work within the Gulf countries.

Saeed Abdul Ghaffar, Secretary General, UAE National Olympic Committee (NOC), welcomed the delegations of the member countries in their second homeland saying that they are proud to meet them once again to discuss the matters on the agenda.

“I’m pleased to convey to you the greetings and appreciation of Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the NOC for your continued efforts and dedication to promote the joint Olympic activities within the region,” he said.

“We are hopeful to come out with decisions to enhance the position and status which have been achieved by our countries in the sports fields and underline the noble principles of the sports movement around the Gulf,” he added.

Abdulla bin Aqla Al Hashim, assistant secretary general for human and environment affairs thanked the UAE NOC and Shaikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on behalf of the secretariat general.
