Abu Dhabi authorities widen runway, enhance lighting at Sir Bani Yas airport

The airport’s weather observation systems have been upgraded to state-of-the-art technology

Abu Dhabi authorities announced the revamping of Sir Bani Yas Airport, located 250km southwest of the Abu Dhabi coast in Al Dhafra region, which serves as the primary gateway to the island.
The runway, taxiways, and apron pavements were fully reconstructed, and the airport’s lighting systems underwent a complete revitalisation to enhance both night operations and visibility for ground personnel, Abu Dhabi Airports said.
The Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) system has transitioned to high-performance LED technology; additionally, a new Airfield Lighting Control System (ALCS) has been introduced, authorities said.

The widening of the runway supports the airport to accommodate Code 4E aircraft operations, bolstering the airport’s role in managing the growing influx of visitors to Sir Bani Yas Island.
The airport’s weather observation systems have been upgraded to state-of-the-art technology, ensuring more accurate and timely weather information, alongside the construction of new service and emergency roadways that will provide enhanced access during urgent situations.
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), said: "The UAE continues to strengthen its position as a global leader in aviation by investing in advanced infrastructure and adopting the highest international standards in safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The recent rehabilitation at Sir Bani Yas Airport reflects this commitment, supporting seamless connectivity and reinforcing the country's vision for sustainable tourism and economic growth.
Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at Abu Dhabi Airports, said: “The completion of the rehabilitation works at Sir Bani Yas Airport is a significant milestone in our efforts to ameliorate the nation’s aviation infrastructure and is a direct result of effective collaboration with the General Civil Aviation Authority, highlighting our steadfast dedication to operational excellence. These enhancements will not only boost the airport's operational capacity but will also play a crucial role in supporting Al Dhafra Region’s continued growth as a key eco-tourism destination.”
