American men lose in QFs at water polo worlds

The U.S. was attempting to win a men’s water polo worlds medal for the first time. On Monday, the U.S. women’s team which had won the past two world titles and three of the past four was beaten 9-7 by Russia in the quarterfinals.

Ryan Bailey scored three goals for the Americans on Tuesday.

Serbia beat Germany 9-4 and will meet Hungary in one men’s semifinal Thursday. Croatia defeated Montenegro 9-6 to advance to the other semifinal against Italy, which beat Spain 10-6 Tuesday.

The gold medal final is scheduled for Saturday.

In women’s semifinals Wednesday, Russia plays China and Greece takes on Italy. The winners advance to Friday’s gold medal match.
