He said that the first phase of output increase was completed last year.

He was talking to reporters following an announcement to hold an international conference on corrosion and materials in the capital. Three-day conference will start on February 6 under the aegis of Adco for the fifth time.

Saeed Khouri said the keynote speaker on occasion will be Neil Thompson, president of NACE International, the largest institution in the world for corrosion awareness and education with 15,000 members from 91 countries, including 150 in the UAE.

Dr Ali Moosvi, Adco's senior specialist engineer for corrosion and a board member of the NACE's UAE chapter while describing the importance of corrosion, said results from a recent study have shown that corrosion costs the US alone about $300 billion a year.

Adco have been at the forefront of corrosion control and materials technology in the UAE. The company's General Manager Kent Wells said: "This year we are embarking upon implementing a comprehensive asset integrity management system which will further boost our efforts to provide the best protection that we can for our assets and ensure a safe operating environment for our personnel."

Saleh Al Wahedi, Adco's engineering and major projects manager said last year the company completed the first phase of an on-going $60 million project to install cathodic protection systems at all Adco wells to protect them permanently from corrosion.

He said: "We have also replaced the traditional steel tubing to prolong the life of these wells which are major assets for both Adco and the UAE."
