Official sources said here yesterday that now that the positive draft report has been submitted to the government, Basha Dam is expected to be constructed before Kalabagh Dam, which requires a consensus of the provinces.
The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has informed the federal government that the draft report was now being reviewed by Wapda and an international panel of experts.
However, they said that the implementation of the Stage II of the project could be started after final feasibility report of Stage I had been received and approved by June 2004.
The federal government has been informed by Wapda that detailed engineering and design could be finished by December 2005 while the construction could be started by 2006 to eventually complete the project by 2013.
Regarding the salient features of the project, it was stated by Wapda that Basha dam could carry a storage capacity of around 7.3 MAF and the power generation capacity of about 3660 MW.
Wapda has informed the government that all disputes related to the project had been resolved and that logistic, access road and transmission system needed, would now be looked into in detail.
In another development, Wapda was told that the country was in need of a more multi purpose projects which should include besides power generation, water storage capacity as well, instead of run of river power projects.
Wapda officials believed that by the time Basha Dam could be completed, the existing reservoir at Mangla and Tarbela would be such that Basha Dam reservoir could be used as replacement of Tarbela and Mangla dam.
In a recent meeting at the Planning Commission, Wapda said that there was a potential site at Skardu which could produce about 2500 MW electricity and storage capacity of more than the combined capacity of Tarbela, Mangla and Basha dam, due to remoteness of the area, the implementation take longer time.
Meanwhile, it was also learnt that the government has approved Rs 3 billion project that envisaged to connect Hub Power Project to the Karachi Electricity Supply Corporation (KESC) system through a 220/500 KV transmission and grid station for exchange of power between KESC and Wapda system.
The technical details of the project had been discussed with the sponsors and all issues resolved.
