As competition intensifies across the global smartphone market, leading manufacturers are prioritising features that directly influence purchasing decisions and long term brand loyalty.
Top executives at smartphone manufacturers opine that AI driven optimisation has become a core differentiator, enabling devices to deliver stronger processing efficiency, enhanced multitasking, and smarter user experiences. High resolution imaging systems continue to shape product positioning, while advancements in battery life address growing consumer demand for all day reliability.
At the same time, improvements in connectivity, GPU capabilities, and mobile gaming performance are creating new value propositions, particularly for younger, tech savvy demographics. Together, these innovations highlight a shift towards devices designed not only for communication but as high performance productivity and entertainment tools, underscoring the strategic direction of the industry.
Breakthrough Technologies
Fadi Abu Shamat, Vice-President and Head of the Mobile eXperience Division, Samsung Gulf Electronics, said artificial intelligence (AI) will be evolved into an invisible co-pilot in the upcoming smartphone lineup.
“In our next Galaxy lineup, the biggest shift is that AI becomes more deeply integrated into how the phone works, not treated as a separate set of tools. It’s about making AI feel like dependable everyday infrastructure in the background, more agentic, more proactive, and more helpful across daily tasks, rather than something users have to consciously ‘turn on’ or learn how to use,” Abu Shamat told BTR.
He said consumers can expect more on-device intelligence, faster and more natural interactions, and experiences that help reduce friction, while keeping privacy at the center of the experience.
“From a hardware perspective, we’re continuing to invest in engineered innovation that goes beyond a single breakthrough device. That means pushing camera systems, displays, performance, and battery efficiency together as a connected experience, rather than optimising one spec in isolation.”
On camera and battery efficiency specifically, he said the focus is on delivering end results with less effort, particularly for the moments people care about most today, such as low-light capture, video, and quick edits that are ready to share. “We’re seeing continued appetite locally for meaningful, user-centric innovation, which gives us confidence in the demand for what’s coming next,” he said.
Durable, Practical Devices
Debo Zhang, General Manager at HONOR GCC, said HONOR is ushering in technologies that push far beyond today’s expectations, reshaping the very idea of what a phone can be.
“In our upcoming smartphone lineup, consumers can expect truly breakthrough technologies that redefine what a phone can do. We’ve introduced before the ‘Robot Phone’ concept, a device that leverages AI to actively assist users in daily tasks, from real-time translation to intelligent content creation. This is part of our broader HONOR Alpha Plan, which positions our devices as AI-centric, adaptive tools rather than just smartphones,” Zhang told BTR.
On the hardware side, he said HONOR foldable devices are becoming more durable and practical, with reinforced hinges and screens. Battery performance is being boosted with advanced silicon-based content, delivering longer life and faster charging while supporting AI-intensive tasks. “Camera systems are also evolving dramatically: we’re integrating AI-powered photography and editing tools that allow users to capture stunning photos and videos and then enhance or edit them directly on-device, making professional-quality content creation more accessible than ever. Overall, the focus is on combining cutting-edge hardware with intelligent AI features to create devices that feel truly personal, powerful, and future-ready,” he said.
User Experience
Abu Shamat said Samsung smartphones stand out by prioritising the entire user experience rather than chasing specs for the sake of checking boxes.
“We differentiate by focusing on the complete experience rather than isolated specs. That means a more cohesive approach where AI enhances what users actually do most such as camera, display, along with core interactions, and where design and engineering decisions translate into a phone that feels premium, and intuitive. Performance, for us, is not just about peak power, but about stability and smoothness across everyday tasks, whether that’s multitasking, content creation, or entertainment,” he said.
“A big part of this comes from how deeply we listen to our users. We continuously gather insights from consumers across different markets and usage scenarios, and those real-world learnings directly shape how we design, refine, and evolve our devices,” he added.
“We also continue to differentiate through our long-term trust and ecosystem experience, where smartphones, wearables, tablets, TVs, and appliances devices securely work together to unlock connected experiences that no device can deliver on its own. This combination of meaningful innovation and reliability is why we remain confident in demand and momentum in the UAE and the wider region,” he said.
AI centric innovation
Zhang said HONOR is rapidly embracing AI centric innovation as a core differentiator across its next generation devices.
“Our HONOR Alpha Plan centres on transforming from a traditional smartphone maker into an AI device ecosystem company, integrating advanced AI capabilities deeply into hardware and software experiences.
“We also take user privacy very seriously, we’ve integrated the industry’s first on-device AI Deepfake Detection directly on our devices, protecting privacy while still providing real-time alerts if manipulated content is detected,” he said.
When it comes to performance, he said HONOR is adopting silicon carbon battery technology with the highest silicon content which is 25% in HONOR phones to increase energy density and endurance, paired with intelligent power management systems powered by AI. “We continue to evolve our foldable lineup with improvements in durability, hinge strength, and advanced materials, addressing core technical pain points in foldable design.
“In mid tier and value categories, we balance competitive camera specs, powerful battery performance, durability, fast charging and modern design to offer strong price to feature ratios, appealing to consumers who want more tech for less,” he said.
Zhang said the smartphone category across priority markets has entered a mature phase. Growth is no longer driven by first-time adoption, but by replacement cycles, brand switching, and perceived value upgrades.
“Hardware alone is no longer the main driver of choice. Instead, people are looking for intelligent devices that enhance daily life through AI-powered features, whether that’s smarter photography, predictive assistants, or seamless cross-device experiences,” he said.
At the same time, he said rising demand for AI-enabled functionality is creating opportunities for innovation across both premium and mid-tier segments.
“Brands that can combine performance, AI integration, and intuitive user experiences will be best positioned to meet evolving consumer expectations over the next year,” he said.
To a question about global chip shortage and any impact on HONOR production timelines, component sourcing, and product strategy, he said: “At this stage, we have not experienced any significant disruption from chip supply constraints. We have sufficient reserves to support our current production and product roadmap,” Zhang concluded.
What Buyers Want
The UAE customers are drawn to novelty and newness when it comes to smartphones. For them, it is not just about technical specifications — the overall experience of using the device is what truly matters.
“With every new launch, customers expect something different and exciting, whether in design, functionality, performance, or how the phone fits into their daily lifestyle,” according to Jumbo Spokesperson.
To a question what key features do UAE customers check in new smartphones, the spokesperson said the camera remains the primary factor for most customers when choosing a new smartphone, as people increasingly use their phones for photography, videos, and social media.
“Beyond that, AI features are becoming an important consideration, as customers look for smarter, more intuitive experiences that make their phones easier and more useful in everyday situation.”
