Defending champions New Zealand will go up against Fiji in the Cup quarterfinals in the women's section after finishing second in Pool C of the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens on Friday.
The Black Ferns Sevens, who have triumphed in four of the seven editions so far in Dubai, wrapped up their pool engagements with a 19-14 defeat to France in their last fixture at The Sevens Stadium.
Earlier in the day, the five-time champions of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series had beaten England 40-12.
But they came up against gritty opponents with the French holding their own with Seraphine Okemba and Shannon Izar working it quite well with a brace of tries and conversions respectively.
Kelly Brazier and Tyla Nathan-Wong had two tries and two conversions apiece but they lacked the slickness and were a tad erratic.
France, who had seen off Japan earlier, remained unbeaten and topped the pool.
The second day of proceedings had begun with Spain and Fiji playing out a 19-19 stalemate in Pool B, while Australia beat Ireland. Canada turned it on against Brazil, with them scoring 43 without a reply, in Pool A. USA topped Pool A with Canada second, while Australia were the Pool B leaders followed by Fiji.
The Americans, their neighbours Canada and Russia qualified from Pool A, while Australia, Fiji and Spain made it through from Pool B. France and New Zealand made the cut from Pool C.
Australia take on Spain, while Canada meet France in the quarterfinals. Fiji are pitted against the Black Ferns, while the Americans face off against Russia.
England are up against Ireland in an interesting match-up in the ninth place play-off, while Japan and Brazil go head to head in the play-off for 11th.
