Government officials and business leaders to headline the two-day international event
I am often shamed for being too thin. While it is considered a new standard of beauty, I am often told I am anorexic when I am not. It almost takes away my sense of femininity from me. What can I do? – Sarah Dias
Dear Sarah,
I am sorry to hear that you are being body shamed. I strongly feel that this should not be happening, given the widespread increase in awareness of individual differences that we as humans should learn to accept and respect.
If you are very thin, a doctor would categorize you as underweight. In light of this, I can see why a family member or a person close to you might share his or her concern. I would expect that these people, who have the opportunity to witness your daily eating behaviours should realise that you are not anorexic or starving yourself.
In general, I suggest that you firmly set boundaries with people when they comment on your weight, try to shame you, or call you anorexic. Tell them their comments are inappropriate and to stop immediately.
I would also like to remind you to love and accept yourself just the way you are. Don’t let anybody take away your sense of femininity. You can also express your femininity in so many different ways that are not based on weight at all.
Wishing you well,
Doctor Annette
