The first batch of shortlisted books in the ‘Contribution to the Development of Nations’ and ‘Literary and Art Criticism’ categories of Shaikh Zayed Book Award was announced last week.
“The award’s Scientific Committee convened to review the judges’ reports. The titles were carefully selected out of a total of 114 nominations in the Translation category and 298 submissions in Young Author’,” award Secretary-General Dr Ali Bin Tamim.
The ‘Translation’ category included translations from works in English, French and German as well as works translated from Arabic to English. Three books have been shortlisted. They are Mahmoud Darwish: Absent Presence by Dr Mohammad Shaheen from Jordan; A Brief History of Justice, translated by Mustafa Nasser from Iraq (authored by David Johnston); and Being and Time, translated by Fathi al-Maskini from Tunisia. The original title of is Sein und Zeit by German philosopher Martin Heidegger.
The three more books selected under the ‘Young Author’ category are Nawares Che Guevara (The Seagulls of Che Guevara) by Mariam Al Saa’di from the UAE (published by Athar Publishing House, Dammam 2012); Falsafat Jeel Deleuze by Adel Hadjami from Morocco; and Mazaher al I’tiqad’ by AbdulHakim Sayyed from Egypt.
The shortlists in other categories of the award, collectively worth Dh7 million. will be announced over the coming weeks.
The full list of winners is scheduled for announcement at a Press conference on April 2 to be followed by the award ceremony on April 28.
