Zara withdraws garments after KT report on offensive tags

MADRID — Spanish fashion group Inditex, which owns the Zara clothing chain, said on Wednesday it had withdrawn and replaced thousands of garments in its Bershka brand because their labels had been emblazoned with a mosque motif and might cause religious offence.

The textiles company reacted following a report on the clothes in Khaleej Times, an editorial in Al Bayan.

“We detected on certain of our spring-summer 2006 items that we had included a label which could be wrongly interpreted,” an Inditex spokesman told AFP.

“Given the possibility that this label could be a problem for our customers for religious reasons we decided to replace them,” the spokesman said.

The label concerned shows a postcard with an arrow pointing to a mosque minaret and the slogan “We slept here,” in English.

On the new version, flowers have replaced the minaret. The spokesman said the garments had been pulled from the shelves in 368 Bershka shops worldwide.
