Dr Jacques Diouf, Director-General of FAO, awarded Gen. Shaikh Mohammed the Gold World Food Day Medal at Al Bahar Palace yesterday.

The director-general offered FAO’s full support to boost agricultural and environmental initiatives in the UAE and the two discussed the new decree on organic agriculture. They also recalled the visionary words of the late Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who said agriculture is the basis for culture and civilisation.

Dr Diouf said that the vision and determination of Shaikh Zayed to create a better agriculture environment in the UAE is an example of successful sustainable agricultural development.

Referring to his visit to the Abu Dhabi organic farms pilot project on the outskirts of the capital, the FAO official said it is ’very innovative’.

Shaikh Mohammed welcomed the director-general of the largest specialised UN agency to Abu Dhabi and underscored his support to the organisation’s mandate to reduce hunger in accordance to the world food summit objectives and the millennium development goals of the United Nations.

The meeting was attended by Kayan Akram Jaff, FAO resident representative to the UAE.
