Informed sources said a shortage of inspectors has put a lot of pressure on the existing staff. They also suffer due to lack of incentives and allowances besides being exposed to risk while inspecting some sites such as establishments dealing in chemicals and other dangerous stuff.

Meanwhile, new mechanisms that were recently introduced in the Labour Inspection Section for receiving fresh transactions of applicants have not given the anticipated results, according to Qassim Jamil, the head of the section.

He said the section was reviewing the situation and may ultimately have to revert back to the old approach.

The Labour Inspection Section affiliated to office of the Ministry of Labour in Abu Dhabi had on Saturday started implementing the new mechanism of receiving the applications of individuals directly which were earlier sent by the work permits section.

This step was taken to reduce the workload of each section and to be able to find out if establishments that are being inspected would need new or more employees. Senior officials at the section were considering the results of the new mechanism and whether they eased procedures at the ministry.

They said that the new mechanism relies on not sending the applications directly from the permits section to Emirates Post. The applicants will be able to deliver applications by hand and go to the Labour Inspection Section to complete the inspection process of establishments. The officials expressed their displeasure with the results of the revoked new mechanism which they said was aimed at facilitating procedures. The mechanism was initially meant to reduce crowds at the counters of the Ministry of Labour.

Jamil said that the inspectors are currently subjected to training courses on the I -MATE device, which will be used to deliver instructions of inspection without the need to come to the ministry.
