Work begins on sewage projects

DUBAI — Implementation on a number of major sewage projects has been started as part of the Dubai Municipality's general plan to fulfil the emirate's requirements by 2020.

Farid Sadi, Assistant Director of the Drainage and Irrigation Department in Dubai Municipality, said that Dubai's urban areas and their future expansion have been divided into major sewerage zones, each served by a main pumping station that pumps to the Al Awir sewage treatment plant, or the future treatment plant that is to come up in Jebel Ali.

Sadi said numerous sewage projects including new ones that are in the design stage, are being undertaken in the city.

The department will complete in the first quarter of this year the designing of sewerage and drainage project in Oud Al Muteena area, he said, adding that the project is spread over 522 hectares and it is expected to be completed in 2008.

"Among the new projects, the design phase for plants in Al Quoz 3 and 4 would be completed by middle of this year, while all the projects, spread over a total area of 240 hectares, would be completed by April 2008," he said.

The 200-hectares industrial project in Al Quoz, the design for which is expected to be ready this year, will be completed by July 2008, he said.

Ongoing projects include those in Al Barsha 2 and 3, being executed at a total cost of Dh193 million, he said, adding that work on Al Barsha 2 began in March last year, while the Al Barsha 3 project started in November 2004, he added. Spread over 534 and 400 hectares respectively, these projects will be completed by end of 2006 or beginning of 2007.

According to Sadi, another project in the industrial area of Al Qusais started in May last year. The Dh25 million project is spread over 242 hectares, and will be completed by the end of this year. Mizhar 2 project costing Dh69 million began in May 2005. It is spread over 420 hectares and is expected to be completed by end of this year. One of the major projects the department has begun work on is the Dh126 million Mirdif project, which began in May last year. The project, spread over 595 hectares, will end by the beginning of 2007. The Dh62 million Al Warqa 2 project, which started in May last year, is spread over 382 hectares and will be completed by the end of this year.
