ANOTHER CHARITY initiative, this time from the Cristal Hotel, is “A Ramadan To Remember” package, a special Ramadan Iftar for orphans. The hotel is giving the opportunity to its corporate clients to sponsor an Iftar for 25 orphans and, to set the mood for giving, Cristal will be the first to offer a free Iftar to a group of 25 children.

On each sponsorship the Red Crescent is bringing along 25 orphaned kids to enjoy not only the fast breaking meal, but also a live magic show and gifts. If they wish to do so, clients are welcomed to coordinate with the Cristal Hotel to customise the special event.

In addition, the hotel is also offering an Iftar buffet at GEMS Restaurant for only Dh 99, wherein a portion of the total bill will be used to sponsor a free meal for an orphan.

“The Cristal Hotel is offering these special packages to serve as an avenue for our clients to realise their social responsibility and celebrate the true spirit of Ramadan. We also understand that many companies may not have the proper resources to organise such civic-oriented activities by themselves, so ‘A Ramadan To Remember’ will be a great help for them and will surely be appreciated by the business community,” said Peter Blackburn, general manager of Cristal Hotel Abu Dhabi.

Get in shape for first indoor run

IN SUPPORT of Starwood’s 2010 Road to Awareness campaign, Aloft Abu Dhabi will host the “Aloft Runs for Children @ ADNEC”, the first indoors run in the capital. The run on September 17 will be inside the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

It will take place over 12 hours from 7am till 7pm and is open for both teams and individuals.

Although the objective is to complete 12 hours of running, participants can run any distance. Teams and individuals will compete for different challenges including most kilometres ran in 12 hours per team, best performance for the special runs (6, 10, and 20km runs), youngest and oldest average team age, largest family and the best dress code.

For each kilometre ran, participants will enter a grand prize raffle for the chance to win one of many prizes including trips, hotel stays, dinners, health club memberships in one of the Starwood hotels around the world.

UNICEF will use the money raised from the campaign to support its project of making basic education accessible for children in South Africa.

The Road to Awareness donations will help UNICEF support 1,500 orphans and vulnerable children in five rural schools to complete their primary education and realize their full potential. It will also help improve the quality of schooling by training 70 teachers in child-friendly education methods and allow the implementation of sports programmes in 18 schools to enhance children’s physical and psychological development.

Each year Starwood’s Road to Awareness campaign raises money for a different area of UNICEF’s work. In 2009, the initiative raised over $200,000 for UNICEF’s efforts to protect and improve the lives of children living and working on the streets of Egypt.

Now in its third year, Road to Awareness is part of the wider Check Out for Children partnership between Starwood Hotels and UNICEF.

“Over the last 15 years of Starwood’s Check Out for Children partnership, guests and associates at participating hotels have raised over US$ 22 million for UNICEF globally. This has enabled the vaccination of more than one million children against six potentially fatal diseases and saved their lives,” said Roeland Vos, president of Starwood in Europe, Africa and Middle East.

Participation fees for all runners, which include a runner bag, are: Dh60 for individual runner, Dh350 for a team up to seven persons, Dh675 for teams of up to 15 persons and Dh1,000 for up to 25 persons teams. An additional fee of Dh10 per kilometre is charged.
