ABU DHABI — The projects announced recently in the Western Region of the emirate of Abu Dhabi by General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, delighted not only the local population, but also the Western Region Development Council (WRDC).

WRDC Director-General Mohammed Hamed Al Mazrouei thanked Shaikh Mohammed for his visit to Ghayathi. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude on behalf of WRDC and the people of the Western Region to Gen. Shaikh Mohammed following his second visit to the area,” said Al Mazrouei in a letter. After visiting Liwa late last month, Gen. Shaikh Mohammed had attended a majlis meeting with local residents in Ghayathi on August 3, where he announced new projects, including 60 new houses in Bida Al Matawa, a village near Ghayathi.

“There will also be a new, better equipped hospital replacing the old one,” Al Mazrouei told Khaleej Times, adding that the project had been pending for a long time.

Ghayathi is a small desert city about 300km west of Abu Dhabi and 30km south of Al Ruwais. Most of its 10,000-12,000 residents are either farmers or work for the local government.

During the WRDC roadshow in the region a few months ago, hundreds of residents had voiced their concerns over lack of housing and medical facilities.

The farmers complained that animal fooder was expensive and urged the need for some shopping and entertainment facilities for women and children.

While housing and healthcare improvements have already been announced, WRDC is also liaising with the Cooperative Society to build a hypermarket in Ghayathi.

“In about two weeks we are going to open an office for government services here,” mentioned Al Mazrouei. This, in effect, means that local people will not have to spend several hours on journeying to Delma Island or Madinat Zayed, in order to obtain birth, marriage and death certificates or any other official documents.
