Residents have complained that drivers of some vehicles transporting sewage and non-potable water disposed of it in places near the mass housing of workers, posing a risk to the health of those living in the vicinity. Even camels are exposed to infections that have proved fatal quite often.

Khaled Al Mansoury, a resident of Gayathi, confirmed that many of his camels had died after drinking polluted water from such places.

He said the driver of one of the tankers had poured the hazardous and drainage water in places other than those allocated for such purposes.

He said that he had already filed a case against the person causing the problem.

Ahmed Atiq Al Hamly, a resident of Al Gharbia, called for strong measures to deter violators from disposing of the waste water in places allocated by the municipality, away from residential areas and those through which the camels pass.

Al Hamly also noted that this problem had caused considerable losses to the owners of labour accommodations. He said that it has direct impact on the health of labourers, as a result of which, the owners have to incur expenses on their treatment.

Salim Ibrahim, another inhabitant, urged the Al Gharbia Municipality to play a stronger role in dealing with such offenders.

In a statement, however, the municipality disowned responsibility of tackling the dumping of water and garbage in Ruwais, Ghayathi.

The municipality pointed out that the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi and the Abu Dhabi Company of Sewerage are the authorities that deal with such violations, according to Law No. 16 of 2005, which aims at protecting the environment, wildlife and biodiversity.

The Al Gharbia Municipality stated that the municipality is cooperating with the relevant authorities to curb such violations and refer violators to the Prosecution.

The municipality recently held a coordination meeting at its headquarters in Madinat Zayed with officials from the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Company of Sewerage and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) in order to find effective practical solutions to the problem.

Those present at the meeting agreed to form a monitoring committee comprising representatives from the Al Gharbia Municipality, the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi and Adnoc.
