The meeting, organised by the Emirates Voluntary Association, also called for categorising such organisations depending on their area of operation and for better networking so as to make them more effective.

The conference, titled “Development of Voluntary Work”, stressed the need for increased communication and interaction among such bodies operating in the UAE and abroad.

It underscored the necessity for setting up a mechanism to increase the awareness of school and university students about voluntary work.

The final day of the conference, held under the patronage of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, saw the presentation of eight research papers. The conference highlighted media’s role in promoting voluntary work. Delegates to the conference paid their tributes to the efforts of Shaikh Zayed, who had laid the foundation for voluntary work in the UAE, and to Dr Shaikh Sultan for his efforts to encourage the younger generations in voluntary work. They also made a mention of the efforts of Dr Ali Abdullah Al Kaabi, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, who supports social welfare associations.
