The 12-month programme began last September with the objective of teaching the visually impaired how to sail a 42-foot yacht, possibly at a competitive level.

The course, sponsored by Gargash Enterprises, is run by Bluesail LLC based in Bur Dubai and licensed by the International Royal Yachting Association.

Sessions are held on Saturdays and participants are supported during the course by Buddies, volunteers trained in blind sailing techniques.

"The experience was very exciting," said bank employee Mansoor from Yemen at the graduation ceremony. "We were not worried at all, we received a lot of guidance from the Buddies."

"Teamwork was essential in successfully completing the programme," said UAE national Ahmed, adding that he was willing to come back for other courses and offer support to other participants.

Programme Director Greg Boyle, from Bluesail, said the next course will kick off in September. "The aim for this initiative is to encourage and include people with all types of disabilities."

One of the Buddies, Mohammed Saihoon, who is also a member of the UAE Yachting Team, pointed out that he learnt a great deal from participants. "This course proves that, with a little support, the visually impaired can take part in any sport."
