Varsity marks end of training programmes for school students

ABU DHABI - Zayed University (ZU) recently celebrated the conclusion of its summer training programmes for high school students and supervisors of the Abu Dhabi Educational Zone (ADEZ) which continued for several months and attracted 840 students.

Dr Hanif Hassan Al Qassimi, Vice-President of ZU, praised the support of the President, His Highness Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, for the educational advancement in the UAE and his encouragement to enable young generations with acquire knowledge that helped prepare themselves in participating in the future growth of the country.

He said the university had organised the training programme for developing English language skills and to help a batch of students obtain the ICDL certification, as an initiative of the Office of the President. These programmes were supported and followed up by Shaikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Director General of the President's Office, and Shaikh Diab bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Director, Diwan of the President, and Chairman of ADWEA, who visited the Abu Dhabi Campus recently, and were received by Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research and President of ZU.

Shaikh Mansoor and Shaikh Diab were apprised of university's programmes. They met the trainees, before touring the departments, labs and libraries at ZU.

Dr Qassimi said that Shaikh Mansoor assured the ZU of the support of the Office of the President for the important initiative which enabled high school students to obtain the ICDL Certificate - an international certificate accredited by the Unesco, and lauded the university's efforts in the implementation of the programme.

Dr Abdullah Abonamah, Director of the Institute for Technological Innovation (ITI), said that around 600 male and female high school students participated in the programme, which was divided into morning sessions for females and afternoons for males in the Abu Dhabi Campus.

During the course, students were taught seven modules to obtain the licence: basic concepts of information technology (IT), using computers and managing files, word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation, information and communication. The Unesco has lately accredited the Institute for Technological Innovation (ITI) as the centre of its examinations for UAE and AGCC Countries.

Dr Elaine Jarchow, Dean-College of Education, said: "The College organised a summer training English programme for high school students in the context of the cooperation agreement signed before with Abu Dhabi Educational Zone to train around 240 male and female students.

It was an excellent experience for the college of education, its faculty and students to organise such a programme, and "we hope to develop these activities next year too", he said.
