The MoEY had earlier turned down the request to hold the wedding ceremony in the school since it violated the Private Education Act, which only allows holding of get-together parties and functions aimed at cementing relations between students, teachers and parents.

The Group had first wanted to use the auditorium of one of its schools to stage the wedding ceremony of the son of the Varkey Group owner. But this had been categorically turned down by the ministry. The Group, then, submitted a request on Saturday asking the Ministry to allow it to hold the wedding reception for guests in the auditorium after the church wedding was over, but again the request was turned down.
