Addressing the Press here yesterday, Hughes said both events would take place in the UAE. The first initiative will train and network successful women entrepreneurs from the Middle East and North Africa to build their professional skills, strengthen their businesses, and expand their contacts, she said.

"The UAE is a great place to host the businesswomen summit that will take place later this year because women here in the UAE are very dynamic and involved in the business community," Hughes added.

The Business Women's Summit, according to a correspondence from the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi, is slated for November this year. Likewise, some 800 to 1,000 Emirati women are set to take part in a business and information technology skills training so that they can successfully participate in the global economy.

Both projects have been funded by the Middle East Partnership Initiative (Mepi), which US President George W. Bush launched in 2002 to promote positive reform in the Middle East and North Africa. More than $293 million has been received to support about 350 programmes in 14 countries, including the Palestinian territories.
