Urban planning meet to aid Sharjah uplift

SHARJAH — Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah yesterday inaugurated the Eighth Sharjah Urban Planning Symposium (SUPS) titled ‘Federalism and strategic planning coordination — Theory, Practice and the case of UAE’ . The symposium is concluding tomorrow at the University of Sharjah Men's Campus.

The symposium is being attended by a number of VIPs and prominent officials in Sharjah, in addition to more than 500 urban planning reseachers and experts from various countries, who will present their related working papers.

SUPS has been organised by the Sharjah Town Planning and Survey Directorate in collaboration with South Bank University in UK, Sharjah Municipality, American University in Sharjah and University of Sharjah.

Addressing the Press soon after inaugurating the exhibition, Shaikh Sultan said the Government of Sharjah proves its great keenness and spares no efforts in organising the urban symposium annually where various international experts are actively participating in exchanging their points of views regarding urban planning.

“Organising the symposium for the eighth consecutive year is a great move as the symposium is witnessing tremendous sucess. The Sharjah Consultative Council will closely study the main recommendations that will be derived tomorrow and will implement the reccomendations that can be of great benefit to the emirate of Sharjah,” he said, noting that His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, played a significant role in planning new residential areas that was being planned recently by the STPSD.

Shaikh Sultan said that the Sharjah Ruler “regularly stresses on the need to develop the urban planning in Sharjah in parallel with the urban planning development in other countries.”

During the inauguration ceremony various speeches were delevered including the speech of Dr Ismael Al Bishri, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, who highlighted the significance of proper planning which is a must for ensuring development in all the fields of life. He expressed hope the the symposium gathering local and international experts under one roof will witness great success.

Dr Engineer Obaid bin Ahmad Al Tunaiji, Director General of the STPSD who also spoke on the occasion siad, the symposium is considered one of the most prominent events in the region for discussing issues pertaining to urban development and planning.

He said that the symposium was firstly launched in 1998 and mainly aims at highlighting crucial issues regarding urban planning and development.“ Each year we choose a topic that will bring benefits to the participants and the attendants of the symposium- in 1988 we highlighted the infrastructure growth in UAE, in the last years symposium we highlighted

the problems posed by city development and urban progress in the age of globalisation, while this year we chose to discuss the Federation and strategic planning coordination: Theory practice in UAE.”
