They have approached the Minstry of Education (MoE) alleging that the Al Taawan Private School (Sherwood Academy) has raised the tuition fees by at least 43 per cent.

K. Shahnewaz, one of the complainants, said that the school management had forced them to accept the hike in fees. “In addition to this, when we urged to see the ministry’s approval for increasing the fees, the management refused to show us any document.”

Another complainant, Sayed Othman, told Khaleej Times, “The tuition fee was hiked by at least 43 per cent for the Classes I, II and III. And the maxim um hike was by 80 per cent for Class X. But when we asked an official in the MoE, he informed us that the hike should be restricted to maximum 20 per cent.”

“We are ready to pay extra if the hike is within the 20 per cent limit allowed by the MoE,” said Mohamed Kassim Shah, another complainant.

“I have three children and there’s no hike in my salary. So how can I pay the fees?” asked Sheikh Khurshid.

Aboud Al Ameri, manager of the Al-Taawan Private School (Sherwood Academy), said that the school has got the British Syllabus permission in addition to the MoE’s approval for fees. “This is our new price list for the academic year, and if anyone does not agree, he or she can find another school,” Al Ameri added.

He further said that the management had spent about Dh 18 million to build the new school.

Nadia Maadi, Deputy Manager of the Private Education at the Abu Dhabi Education Zone, affirmed that the school had got the approval from the ministry and the Educational Zone to raise the fees and opt for the British syllabus.
