Unique ENT surgeries carried out in Dubai

DUBAI - Delicate and high precision ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeries were carried out for the first time in the region using the new radio-frequency method. The surgeries were part of medical workshops held along side the fifth AGCC Otorhinolaryngological, Head and Neck Surgery Conference, which was inaugurated on Tuesday morning at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Dubai.

The four-day conference, which ends tomorrow, was inaugurated by Qadi Saeed Mroushid, Director-General of the Dubai Department of Health and Medical Services (Dohms).

A number of senior health officials from the UAE and the AGCC attended the function, among them Dr Abdel Ghaffar Abdel Ghafour, Assistant Under-secretary for Curative Medicine at the Ministry of Health and the representative of the AGCC ENT Society, Mazen Al Khabouri.

Dr Tareq Abuyounus, ENT consultant at Dubai Hospital, senior lecturer at Dubai Medical College and member of the conference organising committee, said that several local and Gulf doctors were among the lucky few who managed to attend the popular medical workshops, in which new and innovative ENT surgical techniques were introduced.

"We brought 20 senior professors from the US, UK, France, Belgium and Germany to Dubai who carried out 20 surgeries at Rashid Hospital. The operations were broadcast live to doctors taking part in the workshops who watched the surgeries on screen at the Dohms auditorium," Dr Abuyounus said.

He said that the patients selected for surgeries suffered from a number of complex ear, nose or throat disorders that would have otherwise required treatment abroad. However, Dr Abuyounus stressed that the ENT section at Dubai Hospital has not sent patients abroad for treatment for the last five years, having the capability and skills among its own surgeons and doctors to carry out all but the rarest of procedures.
