An official source at the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Auqaf told Khaleej Times yesterday that an experimental call to prayer was synchronised in 52 mosques in the capital as a preliminary step to introduce the new system to the city's 400 mosques and all mosques across the country.

Khaleej Times has learnt that many residents could not hear the prayer call (Azan) for the past two days.

The source confirmed that this was because of the test, explaining that the volume on the loudspeakers was lowered for the purpose. The proposed system was tested for five days, the source said. There were also complaints that a recitation from the Holy Quran was heard during the Friday sermon which the source said was a testing of the recorded recitation.

Once the unified call is introduced, the city is likely to have one person to recite the five daily calls to prayer, and then amplify that call simultaneously from the minarets of all mosques. The standard call will be transmitted using a wireless network at exactly the same time.
