Umbilical cord bank at advanced stage

DUBAI — The umbilical cord bank project, executed by the Department of health & medical services at Al Wasl hospital, is at an advanced stage with 60 per cent of it completed, Dr Aly Reda Al Hashimy, director of the medical laboratories department said.

The health department has trained locals for the technical and medical aspects of the project, Asmaa Ibrahim Al Asad, technician officer at the bank, explained. The required medical appliances and equipment have also been chosen. The centre spread over 1,000sq-m will consist of two floors and contain three laboratories.

The centre is the only one of its kind in the region and aims at receiving international recognition from the American blood banks group and others, she elaborated.

The centre will be equipped with state-of-art devices and techniques. Experts in the field will be available for supervision from various countries; namely Singapore, Britain and Germany, Dr Aly Reda declared.
