UCS to launch pioneering project

DUBAI — In an unprecedented move to solve social problems, the Union Cooperative Society (UCS) will start a pioneering project at a total cost of Dh1.3 million to improve health, education and family matters. Marwan Al Thani, Director-General of UCS, said that as part of the cooperatives’ vital strategy towards developing their communities, the UCS has adopted a number of projects to upgrade schools in collaboration with Dubai Educational Zone which will assist them to enhance their resources.

During the year 2003-2004, a sum of Dh1.04 million has been earmarked for 80 schools, nurseries, clinics and associations, he stated. During 2004-2005, a new project will be set up to provide additional resources to enable schools to purchase their requirements and to promote schools’ canteens and restaurants which demanded a lot of facilities, in addition to providing services to needy schools especially in the remote areas. He said that one school was being taken as a model for developing other schools.

The other project which will be carried out after the holy month of Ramadan is being implemented in collaboration with a specialised firm to produce video tapes, cassettes and pamphlets to increase awareness among families and guide their consumption needs by balancing their budgets, selecting appropriate time for purchases and increasing their knowledge about the commodities being made available in the market.

He said that the project would help in minimising family crisis and problems necessitated by economic conditions. Marawan said that aid was being provided to hospitals to acquire necessary medical equipment and furniture.

The UCS is also providing job opportunities to UAE nationals in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.
