Speaking at a four-day regional workshop for the national authorities of the GCC countries on implementation of Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), Abdullah Rashid Al Nuaimi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the UAE is keen on the security, stability and growth of the region. "Today, we live in a global village where there are many dangers and one of these is the availability of certain chemicals which have dual uses," he said.
He asked the industrial sector, customs officials, ports authorities and other stakeholders to strictly follow the guidelines of the International Convention for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to make sure that these substances do not slip into the hands of undesirable elements.
The workshop organised by the National Committee for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in collaboration with Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, was attended by representatives from public as well as private sector and regulators to deliberate on measures to properly control safety, transportation and monitoring of such chemical substances which can be misused by unsocial elements.
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) is the key sponsor of the workshop and has nominated Gasco, Fertil and Takreer as the three companies dealing with chemicals that require declaration.
