Dr. Abdul Wahab Zaid, Head of the Unit, said the DNA technique would help much in genetic confirmation of plants as the Unit produces about 150,000 date palm seedlings a year and this needs focused attention on production quality in order to meet local and global production markets.
This technology, he added, provides the most fastest and full-proof method to identify
varieties of date palm trees because the identification process depends mainly on
observation of a few very morphological properties of plants which are very complicated and can be easily affected by surrounding weather conditions.
‘Results of experiments of the DNA technique were excellent,’he affirmed.
