Sonia Al Hashimi, Chairperson of the UAE Down Syndrome Association, said she was proud of the appeal issued by Shaikh Abdullah to users of his Twitter page and the members of community at large, reflecting the fine human spirit he harbours and his desire to spur those interested in serving and developing local community.
She stated today that such positive interaction demonstrates the social cohesion enjoyed by the UAE leadership and people and the high value of social responsibility and spiritual and material support from the UAE leadership to voluntary work.
“Shaikh Abdullah is maintaining a spectacular presence at various humanitarian and community works and is leading a number of social voluntary agencies including the Emirates Foundation,” she added.
The UAE Down Syndrome Association will mark the World Down Syndrome Day from March 21 to 23 at Dubai Mall and before Burj Khalifa. The Association will host a special art exhibition portraying works by people with the disorder.
A series of workshops and knowledge sessions will also be held to further strengthen public awareness about the genetic disorder that causes damage to mental development.
In celebration of the World Down Syndrome Day, all segments of the community will join hands with children and young people with Down Syndrome from across the UAE on Wednesday.
This is the seventh year that World Down Syndrome Day has been officially marked in the UAE and the first time in history the United Nations officially recognised the 21st of March as World Down Syndrome Day. The date, 3/21, is considered significant because Down syndrome occurs when an individual has three copies of the 21st chromosome.
The main purpose of the event is to raise awareness of this genetic disorder, and to show that there are many resources within the community that enable kids and families to deal with issues related to Down Syndrome and live happy and productive lives.
The activities include community awareness sessions and family fun activities such as face painting, balloon bending and joining together to make collaborative hand print artworks to serve as lasting mementos for 2012 World Down Syndrome Day.
