UAE team for WHO meet

ABU DHABI - A UAE delegation, headed by Minister of Health Hamad Abdul Rahman Al Midfa is participating in the 50th meeting of the Committee of the (WHO)'s East Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO), which started yesterday in Cairo.

In a statement to Khaleej Times, Mr Midfa said the meeting would discuss strategic issues and future plans of the member states, aiming at improving health condition in the region.

The four-day meeting will also review the joint criteria for hospitals accreditation and the social, economical, psychological and environmental aspects of bringing up children in a healthy environment.

Challenges facing the region in combating communicable diseases, particularly the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and the activities undertaken in fighting zoonotic diseases, will also be discussed during the meeting, said the minister.

Participants will also review recommendations included 'Doha Declaration' concerning the impact of the Intellectual Property Rights or the TRIPS Agreement on public health, said Mr Midfa.

He said the meetings would also shed light on the obstacles facing the region in providing quality health care for geriatrics, which has become the new global challenge. In view of the remarkable rise in non-communicable diseases over the past two decades, participants will discuss means of enhancing healthy lifestyle and devising comprehensive strategies to develop systems on promoting healthy trends, he said.

Measures adopted by the member countries in confronting the spread of HIV/Aids epidemic, which has high rate of prevalence in the region, will also be reviewed among the agenda of the meetings, he said. Mr Midfa said the meetings would also discuss the strategies on polio eradication in children and anti-smoking initiatives launched some countries of the region.
