UAE teacher wins India’s top award

SHARJAH — Well known academician and principal of Our Own English High School (OOEHS), Sharjah, Dr Farooq Ahmad Wasil, has been selected this year for the National Award for Teacher, instituted by the Human Resource Development Ministry of the Government of India.

The award will be presented to him tonight by Indian President Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam at a special ceremony at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.

Dr Wasil who is the only Indian teacher to be selected for the national award this year joined the Varkey Group of Schools in 1986 and assumed charge of OOEHS Sharjah in 1994 commencing from his graduate and post graduate studies and culminating in his doctoral thesis. Dr Wasil's field of specialisation has been Education.

Driven by a fervent desire to impart quality education to all strata of the school, he has participated in and chaired innumerable conferences on Education and its multifarious aspects. He has the distinction of being invited as keynote speaker in various Gulf and Indian seminars and conferences. He has also been keenly involved in documenting research projects under the aegis of NCERT and UGC. His articles have appeared in a variety of Research Publications in National and International Journals.

Dr Wasil was formerly Secretary and later Chairman, Council of CBSE Affiliated schools in the Gulf, and he was until recently, the Chairman of the Sports Sub Committee of the Council of CBSE Affiliated Schools in the Gulf. He is currently Convenor, Staff Assessment Committee of the Asian Wing of the Varkey Group of Schools, Convenor, Centre for the Advancement of Teacher Education, Varkey Group. He is blessed with an affable nature and charming disposition.

He has taken on the additional responsibility of Deputy Head of Asian Schools of the Middle East of Global Education Management Systems.
