ABU DHABI - The UAE on Monday signed the agreement for interim headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) on the second day of the fourth session of the agency’s Preparatory Commission.
Dr Abdul Rahim Al Awadi, Assistant UAE Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs, and Rafael Conde, Chairman of the Commission, inked the agreement.
Al Awadi said the conclusion of the agreement demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to render the IRENA mission a success as this agreement forms another cornerstone in building the structure of IRENA headquartered in Abu Dhabi.
The agreement, he added, will empower IRENA with the legal basis to enjoy privileges and immunities needed to assume its functions.
He indicated that the agreement is the first ever signed by a country in the region to host the headquarters of an international organisation.
He affirmed the UAE’s support for IRENA at all levels so as to succeed in its mission in view of the challenges the international community is facing in terms of energy and climate change.
