UAE registers drop in birth of stillborn babies

ABU DHABI — The number of stillborn children has registered a remarkable decline in the UAE over the past three years. Statistics showed that 6.7 newborn deaths were recorded per 1000 of the population in 2003 when compared to 7.14 in 2002 and 8.92 in 2001, according to the 'Statistical Annual Report 2003' issued recently by the Computer and Planning Department at the Ministry of Health.

The birth rate last year registered 15.1 per 1000 population while the fertility rate registered 81.8 per 1000 population among females in the are group of 15 to 49, said the report. It said mortality rate among infants has been declining over the past years with 8.7 per 1000 population death rate registered in 2003 when compared to 8.12 in 2002, 8.9 in 2001 and 9.57 per 1000 population in 1999.

It said the decrease in mortality rate has also included neonates, where mortality rate among neonates registered 5.4 per 1000 population last year compared to 5.51 per 1000 population in 2002 and 6 per 1000 population in 2001.

Death rate among children has also decreased as mortality rate was 1.77 per 1000 population among children below five years and 9.9 per 1000 population among newborns in 2003 versus 1.84 per 1000 population in children below five years and 10.9 per 1000 population in newborns in 2002, said the report.

It said the mortality rate has been on the decline since in 2001. Statistics showed that mortality rate among children below five years, was 2.17 per 1000 population and 11.2 per 1000 population among newborns compared to 2.36 per 000 population in children below five years and 11.8 per 1000 population in newborns in 1999.

The report also mentioned that the annual population growth rate in the UAE has remarkably increased, reflecting the efficacy of the development plans and programmes in the filed of health and their impact on the demographic structure of the country.

"The annual population growth rate in the UAE has notably increased, where it mounted to 7.7 per cent in 2003 compared to 4.4 per cent registered over the past few years", said the report.

It said the number of the UAE population in 2003 exceeded four million persons with a total increase of 287 per 1000 persons, attributing the rise to the availability of different health care services in the country.
