On the heels of final exams winding down and children gearing up for their extended winter break vacation, Abu Dhabi Police have issued an advisory to parents in UAE. Do not place furniture near windows. Kids won't have a way to get to the window and fall. This message reminds parents who live in high-rise residential buildings to remain vigilant to prevent tragedy from needlessly taking them unawares. Weather conditions are much improved as well, prompting families to leave windows and balcony shelves open and unattended for extended periods of time. Young children might wander around such areas and slip over window sills or between bars. Even a fall from two metres off a balcony can be fatal for children or adults alike, the post warned. Some residential buildings do not have window barriers which can prevent people from slipping over the edge. Thus, it is important to take precautions and install window barricades that prevent it from opening beyond 4 inches, metal bars, and lock all balconies when not in use. Parental supervision whilst using such areas is key to safety. Recently, a seven-year-old Arab girl fell to death from her fifth floor family apartment in Sharjah.
