UAE offers urgent humanitarian aid to needy sectors in Iraq

BAGHDAD - The UAE began yesterday extending urgent humanitarian assistance to Iraqis with special needs.

In response to the instructions given by the President, His Highness Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and Her Highness Shaikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the Wife of the President and Chairperson of the UAE Women's Federatiion, and the follow-up of Lt-Gen. Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces, the Emirates Taskforce for Reconstruction of Iraq organised field teams to assess the urgent needs of centres for elderly people, orphans and the handicapped which have suffered acute shortage of food and medical supplies and equipment.

Taskforce Commander Brigadier Obeid Al Kutbi said that he had toured these centres as soon as he received the instructions. "Immediatey after the field teams have finished their tours and assessed the needs of these centres, we offered generators, air-conditioners and medical and food assistance. Maintenance work at these centre has also commenced,'' he said, adding that work is expected be done within the coming days.
